Harriet and Wyn have been the perfect couple since they met in college—they go together like salt and pepper, honey and tea, lobster and rolls. Except, now—for reasons they’re still not discussing—they don’t. They broke up five months ago. And still haven’t told their best friends. It’s a flawless plan (if you look at it from a great distance and through a pair of sunscreen-smeared sunglasses). Van zoveel mensen heb ik zulke goede verhalen gehoord over dit boek, maar ik was eigenlijk een beetje bang om aan dit boek te beginnen. Ik heb nu drie boeken van Emily Henry gelezen: Funny Story, A Great Big Beautiful Life en People we meet on vacation. Hoewel ik Funny Story en People we meet on vacation echt wel leuk vond, had het geen wauw effect voor mij. A Great Big Beautiful Life vond ik jammer genoeg echt slecht. Dus als mensen dan tegen mij zeggen dat dit echt een heel goed boek is, vertrouw ik het niet helemaal. Maar de omschrijving van het boek sprak mij zo ontzettend aan. Ik denk dat het mij aansprak omdat dit ook heel goed mij had kunnen overkomen (gelukkig niet gebeurd). Mijn man en ik zijn ook al 10 jaar samen zijn en er is een hechte vriendengroep om ons heen ontstaan. Zijn beste vrienden werden bevriend met mijn beste vriendinnen (WINNING) In de groep zijn wij echter het enige koppel. Ik was heel nieuwsgierig naar wat er dan zou gebeuren als er in een hechte vriendengroep iemand uit elkaar gaat. Dus ondanks mijn twijfel pakte ik het boek vol enthousiasme op om vervolgens erg verrast te worden…
Wat vond ik ervan?
Eindelijk…. Eindelijk maar toch snap ik de hype rondom Emily Henry. Wat een ontzettend goed, mooi, diepgaand, verdrietig en rakend boek was dit. Vanaf het eerste hoofdstuk had het boek mij helemaal in de greep. Ik denk door de fijne schrijfstijl en door de opbouw van het verhaal. Ik vond het heel leuk dat we steeds terug gingen naar het verleden en heden waardoor je het verhaal van Harriet en Wyn heel goed meekrijgt. Maar ook het verhaal van Harriet en haar twee beste vriendinnen Cleo en Sabrina. Want dit is niet alleen maar een boek over een gebroken relatie, maar juist ook een boek over vriendschappen. Hoe vriendschappen zich over de jaren heen vormen. Hoe je van naar elke dag elkaar ziet gaat naar moeite doen om elkaar te zien. Maar als je dan samen bent het altijd oké is. En dat maakte mij heel nostalgisch en raakte mij ontzettend erg. Ook heb ik tijdens dit boek meerdere malen hardop moeten lachen en ik heb ook zeker een aantal tranen gelaten.
Het mooiste uit dit boek vond ik de les die werd meegegeven: het is oké dat we veranderen, dat de vriendschappen en relaties er niet meer uitziet zoals vroeger, zolang je maar weet dat de vriendschap daardoor niet geëindigd is. Zoals Emily Henry zegt: “Things change, but we stretch and grow and make room for one another.”

Ik geef dit boek 5 sterren omdat het verhaal ontzettend goed is opgebouwd en het thema vriendschap en relaties heel goed wordt neergezet. Ik heb gelachen, ik heb gehuild en ik ben ontzettend geraakt.
